Thomas studied English Literature as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford and graduated in 2007, before working in China for several years. In 2016 he received his PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge. His forthcoming monograph, based on his PhD research, explores the changing role of nonhuman life in the political ecology of western Inner Mongolia, China. As part of the Roadwork team, Thomas is now studying the effects of infrastructural development on the lives of pastoralists in Inner Mongolia.
