The PhD program in Cultural Studies involves conducting independent research and presenting results from it in the form of a dissertation (monograph). A cumulative dissertation is not permitted. In addition to the dissertation, students must complete disciplinary and interdisciplinary qualifying modules totaling 12 ECTS credits.

The core course offerings and support structures include colloquia in the fall and a department-wide doctoral retreat in the spring semester, as well as other courses published in the course catalogue. Special attention is given to the Complementary Methods Program in the Social Sciences. Additionally, interdisciplinary events are available (e.g., transferable skills, University Teaching and Learning, language courses). Each year, Democracy Studies offers a limited number of spots for outstanding doctoral students in the social sciences interested in research on democracy.
